Price for downloading songs/CDs

Hey everyone,

I've been hard at work setting up an online EthnoSuperLounge Shop.

I would like your feedback on pricing.

What price do you think is reasonable for a 1 hour CD? For example, Jimi-san and myself playing Indian music, Taro & Anindo Chatterjee, Takasitar's Jantar Night (Indian electronica) and Tenzin Choegyal's CD? (Please have a look at ethnosuperlounge.com/shop/ for samples of all these CDs.)

What about individual tracks? Some tracks, like Tenzin's and Takasitar's are typically 4-6 minutes. However Indian classical tracks are more like 15-25 minutes.

All tracks will be encoded as 160kbps MP3s.

Please reply on this thread so that we can have a discussion on the topic.

99 US cents is the norm for a track, though if it's 20+
minutes, charge 1.99 and always be sure to state the
length. In australian dollars you'd have to factor in the psychological effects of a consumer having to pay AU$1.09...I'd probably keep it at AU$.99. I personally would charge maybe $7 for an
entire cd...I don't think something i have to download
and burn myself that has no art should cost as much as
a store cd. Also, I encode at 192, the higher the
better.

Just by comparison, most of the CDs I see on iTunes cost $16.99
And most of the tracks are $1.69 there.
I found another relevant site called findbliss.com
Their CDs are mostly $9.99.
Their tracks are priced so that adding up the cost of all tracks is a bit more than the whole CD.

Well, like I said, it's my own online shop. Paypal charge $0.30 per transaction, so I'll try to add a surcharge for small transactions.

When selling other people's music, I'm thinking of taking 25%, which makes it a better deal for them than most online businesses.

As I wrote to you, music consumers and lovers of music naturally want to pay as little as possible to consume more of the music we want. At the same time, many of us want to support the musicians.
The little "experiment" by Radiohead for their latest album was interesting. Here's a blurb from a blogger (marketingblurb.com) on the results:

"The results were tracked by comScore who reported that 1.2 million people around the world visited the Radiohead website during the first 29 days of October. During that time, only 38% of visitors worldwide paid something to download Radiohead's In Rainbows with the average price chosen by consumers at just $4.64. In the United States, 40% of visitors paid something for the download with the average being $8.05. That means 62% of consumers worldwide (60% in the United States) chose to download Radiohead's In Rainbows for free."

Another interesting model which I came across recently is the organization Sellaband. Look at their website and you'll see what I mean (http://www.sellaband.com/). Basically they give listeners (they call them believers) a stake in the musicians they want to support, and you still get a CD when the artist makes a recording (for $10 US).

Otherwise, I personally use eMusic (http://www.emusic.com/) which uses a flat fee for a set number of downloads per month. Their standard price brings the price per track around 30 cents per track regardless of if it's 3 minutes or 30 minutes long.
