‘Bamboo Bliss: Taro Terahara + Shen Flindell'

7pm Saturday 8 December 2007

'Indian Classical Bansuri-Tabla Recital'

Direct from Japan, leading Indian classical bansuri master Taro Terahara is joined by leading Australian tabla player Shen Flindell for Bamboo Bliss from 7pm on Saturday December 8th at Brisbane City Hall's Ithaca Auditorium. Taro & Shen’s New Year’s Dawn Concert was one of the hits of last year’s Woodford Festival and festival-goers will fondly remember that peaceful bamboo flute floating over the festival to usher us into 2007. Bamboo Bliss will be a rare chance to experience Taro's pristine music in a concert hall setting in Brisbane.

Taro Terahara is one of the leading musicians in the thriving and highly competitive Indian classical music scene in Japan. His music comfortably spans the full range from contemplative soulful alaap (slow non-rhythmic introduction) to exciting, rhythmic jhala (fast-paced finale). He has a great command of sur (tuning) and lay (timing), with the ability to compose innovative taans and tihais on the spur of the moment, yet all of this is tempered by a beautiful humility and devotion to the mood and spirit of the raga. His music both engages the mind and touches the heart.

Shen Flindell's tabla playing is noted for his clear sound, comfortable rhythmic sense, intuitive accompaniment, wide repertoire, adept bayan (bass) and a thoroughly genuine love of tabla and Indian classical music. In recent years, as well as becoming a regular fixture on the concert circuit in Japan, Shen has started performing in concerts in India, most notably in the annual Ashu-Babu Memorial Concert in honour of his late Guru-ji, already becoming a major event in the Varanasi musical calendar featuring artists such as Padma Bhushan Debu Chaudhuri and Ustad Shujaat Husain Khan. Back home in Brisbane, Shen's regular EthnoSuperLounge events bring together a diverse and harmonious blend of local and international multicultural artists, and he is now recognised as one of Australia's leading classical tabla accompanists.

Leaders in the thriving Indian music scene of Japan, these two artists' devotion to Guru, Music and Instrument will touch your heart, engage your mind and transport your spirit from calm to elation, in the true essence of Indian Classical Music.
